Nick Beggs – Star Songs

August 17, 2012

Today we have a magazine scan for you.

Taken from Record Mirror, this article features Nick’s ‘Star Song’ selection.

Unusually for KajaFax, this article provides us with an opening to feature the music of another artist.

Back in ’83, Nick chose Blue Eyes by Elton John so for those who want to remind themselves of the track, here it is!

KajaFax returns soon with another slab of the finest ‘Goo!  Keep watching 🙂

Limahl and Mike Noble – Artist

August 13, 2012

Every Kajagoogoo fan and child of the 70’s or 80’s will remember Look-In Magazine.  Billed as the ‘Junior TV Times’, Look-In was teen essential reading and was every teenagers first source of information on all things fashionable from the best in pop music to the newest craze or teen fad.

Look In also contained comic strip pages, with pop groups such as Bucks Fizz, and TV Stars Knight Rider and Worzel Gummidge featuring in their own weekly comic strip stories.  British comic artist and illustrator Mike Noble frequently provided the artwork for the magazine and it is his work that we are to feature today.

Noble had been working as an illustrator full time since the turn of the 1950’s and had in that time worked on many differing types of project – most famously for Gerry Anderson, creator of Captain Scarlet, Fireball XL-5 and Stingray amongst others.  Noble’s style was distinctive and his work well regarded.

On January 14th 1984, Limahl appeared in Look-In Magazine, starring in his own comic strip.  Entitled ‘When They Were Young’, the strip featured a young Limahl as a music obsessed schoolboy growing up in Wigan.  Previous editions of this series had featured contemporaries such as Modern Romance, Haircut 100, Culture Club and….Chas & Dave.

Many of you will have read and may still own that magazine and be familiar with the Limahl comic strip.  KajaFax is both proud and excited to bring you something really special indeed……  The below images are taken from the KajaFax collection and are of the original Pen and Ink drawings complete with transparency ‘speech bubble’ overlays made by Mike Noble back in 1983.  Drawn on 12×16 inch board, these are the original sketches that went on to appear in the magazine and are, of course, signed by the artist.

These really are a fantastic and unusual piece of memorabilia that we would presume are completely unique!  We hope that you enjoy viewing them 🙂

Thank you for reading KajaFax….for the very best in all things ‘Goo!

The Kajagoogoo Tour Ticket Collection – Latest Update

August 8, 2012

Today we return to a long running KajaFax project for which have an update!

For a while now, we have made it our aim to source ticket stubs for as many past ‘Goo shows as we can, and today we have another to add to the collection.

Today’s addition to the gallery is a first in so far as it is taken from the Islands tour of 1984.

A recent acquisition to our archive, this ticket was purchased from the Apollo Theatre in Oxford, and is dated Sunday 1st July 1984.

To recap, here is a sample of our collection thus far:

and for more detailed information, see this page:

Kajagoogoo – Early ‘Melody Maker’ Feature

August 1, 2012

Once again, we bring you the very best in Kajagoogoo magazine features with this great article from early 1983.

Originally printed in Melody Maker, the guys talk to Steve Sutherland about (amongst other things) the band, their record deal with EMI, and the début album, White Feathers.  We have little more to say about the article other than “enjoy the read” – it really is a fascinating interview.

* Back in 1983, Melody Maker was published in a format similar to a modern day tabloid newspaper  – we have tried our best to scan the pages on a standard A4 scanner.  This was quite a tricky task, so please excuse any obvious joins, smears, or other blemishes *

Click on each individual image for a bigger view – these are huge scans so will display in a size big enough to read if the ‘view full size’ option is selected in the WordPress gallery viewer.

Steve Askew and Lu Cozma at the Bedford River Festival – A Résumé

July 26, 2012

Last weekend whilst the KajaFax crew were up in Scotland enjoying Limahl performing at the Rewind Festival, there was more ‘Goo activity taking place in sunny Bedfordshire!

The Bedford River Festival was previously featured in this KajaFax article and both Steve C and I were disappointed that it clashed with the Rewind up in Perth.  There is however always a next time, and when that time comes, we will do our best to be there to show Steve and Lu our support 🙂

Our duo took to the stage that afternoon having promised a few treats for the fans, and by all accounts they did not disappoint!

The set list as performed on the day went something like this….

Dancer
Red
Out Of Time
Building A Mystery
White Rabbit (new arrangement)
Runaway (new arrangement)

The photos we present later in this article show what a terrific event this was – the feedback given both in the press and via emails to the KajaFax inbox are testament to that!  If you were at the event and are now smitten with the voice that is Lu Cozma, why not pop over to her website, http://www.lucozma.com, for the very latest information.  Not only will you find the latest news, tour dates, and photos of Lu, but you can purchase CD copies of her debut album too.

For those who prefer digital media, go to iTunes to download it.

Whether you are a new listener or a diehard fan, we can all look forward to future Lu Cozma live shows and also to her forthcoming second album.

If Steve’s magical guitar work is more your thing, look out for his upcoming solo album.

…and if that wasn’t enough, there was a second treat in store for us.

Steve Askew’s son Courtney and his band Ego Trip.

Their setlist was:

Running Out
Shock
California Gurls
Chinese Rain
Robin Burles’ Subway Adventures
Suit Up
Bridal Wave
I’m Not Alone
Tonight

A striking and original set, a powerful performance, and a deserving crowd reaction!  Well done to Ego Trip for an energetic display that has surely won them a whole bunch of new followers….

and here they all are as it happened on the day…Steve Askew, Lu Cozma, and Ego Trip!

If you want a taster of what ‘Ego Trip’ are all about, why not try the debut E.P., ‘Krokodilian’?

A huge thanks to Steve Askew, Lu Cozma and of course Glenn Kelly at REDdot Music for their help in making this article possible!

KajaFax returns at the weekend with more from the world of ‘Goo!

Limahl Live – KajaFax Reports

July 23, 2012
tags:

The KajaFax team have just returned from a fabulous weekend of music in Scotland….and what a fabulous weekend it was!

The weather was patchy at best, and we did get a little wet on the Sunday show, but other than that we could not have asked for more.  Each and every artist was superb – standout performances being given from Jimmy Somerville, Roland Gift, Marc Almond, ABC, and Adam Ant.

We are however here to discuss Limahl, and we start with his set list for the day.  We posted last week what we thought might be on that list, and despite Limahl mischievously trying to throw us off the scent, we were not too far wrong!

The performance, introduced by compère ‘Doctor’ (from Doctor and the Medics) was:

Kajagoogoo

Ooh to be Ah

Inside to Outside

Only for Love

Hang on Now

Too Shy

Never Ending Story

We were fortunate enough to be at the event as guests of Limahl, and were given the privilege of going backstage to have a few words with him just after his performance.  Steve and I took the opportunity to get a group photograph of him with the KajaFax team, and also had a quick chat about the day’s performance and of course the KajaFax website.  We learned that festival performances differ from the norm in so far as there is no full sound check prior to taking the stage, and that this can sometimes throw up some unexpected technical difficulties.  It seems that today was one of those days, although the crowd would have been unaware of it other than a slight delay prior to the beginning of the set.  Whilst those last minute fixes were being applied, the fans were treated to a short ‘a cappella’ performance, so you could say the glitches worked in our favour 😉

The opening song was ‘Kajagoogoo’ and regardless of any technical issues that may have been going on behind the scenes, so far as we could hear, things were going perfectly.  The band were tight and Limahl’s performance and on stage presence was both energetic and as ever vocally flawless.  He bombarded an appreciative crowd with hit after hit and treated us to a fantastic performance of Inside to Outside which has never before been performed live and was a true highlight for every fan.  With a repertoire of songs like that in his armoury, surely a full length solo gig should be in the diary?

Steve and I would like to extend our thanks to Limahl and the Rewind tour management team for their help and support in both bringing us to the event and making us feel incredibly welcome backstage.

All that is left to show are the images from the day, presented in this gallery…..

Limahl and Steve Askew – Live on Stage Today!

July 21, 2012

Rewind Scotland 2012 is finally here, and today will see Limahl take to the stage as a part of the line-up for the opening day of this year’s weekend of events.

The KajaFax team have taken up temporary residency in Perth, and are eagerly awaiting today’s show.  Excitement is also at fever pitch with the fans, as our email inbox has, over the last week, seen a steady flow of questions about the event as well as good luck messages for both Limahl and Steve.  Thank goodness that the wait is almost over! 😉

As fans, the KajaFax crew are as excited as everybody else!  Tickets in hand, we have our cameras loaded and at the ready to get those all important snaps!  We intend to bring you full details of Limahl’s performance and over the coming days will publish the very best in photos and video clips from the day.  We are also hoping to get a few words with the man himself!

Keep checking KajaFax for the latest updates.

For those of you with tickets, we hope that you get to the venue safely and have a fantastic time!

Limahl is expected on stage at 3:50pm so don’t be late! 😉

With all of the excitement of Rewind, it is important to remember those fans who have opted to travel south rather than north –  the Bedford River Festival is also taking place this weekend and many fans will be there to support Steve Askew and Lu Cozma.

Full information on that event can be obtained HERE and remember that the Bedford River Festival is a FREE EVENT.  If Bedford is local to you, why not pop along and show your support for Steve – Lu is a fantastic vocalist and combined with Steve’s guitar work the performance is sure to be spellbinding.

KajaFax will return next week with full reports on both gigs.

All that remains is for us to wish Limahl, Steve and of course Lu all the very best for a great show!!!

Limahl – Live on Stage on Saturday !!!!!!! The Rewind Festival, Scotland

July 16, 2012

Saturday July 21st is an important day for all fans of Kajagoogoo.

For those in the south of the UK, we have Steve Askew live on stage with Lu Cozma at the Bedford River Festival.  For those of us further north we have Limahl performing at the Rewind Festival in Scotland!  Good times indeed.

The KajaFax email inbox has been inundated with enquiries about the event with questions coming in about everything from the set list to ticketing arrangements!

We have already detailed the Bedford event HERE – today we concentrate on the event in Perth with Limahl.

Although KajaFax has a great relationship with the individual members of Kajagoogoo, we are not ‘privy’ to Limahl’s set list for the day, which is a closely guarded secret!   What we intend to do today is give you all the practical information that you need for the event, and also give the lowdown on our top tips for what we think you may expect from Limahl on the day.

HOW TO GET TO THE FESTIVAL:

BY CAR

There is plenty of parking at Scone Palace and it is free; Scone Palace is situated 2 miles north of Perth on the A93.  If you have a Sat Nav, the postcode is PH2 6BD.  However, when you get near to Perth, look out for signs to the festival and follow them for the best route from your location.

BY TRAIN

The nearest train station is situated 3 miles from the festival and is Perth Railway Station.

BY SHUTTLE BUS FROM PERTH

For those of you travelling in to the festival from Perth City Centre, Stagecoach will be operating a shuttle service over the weekend to the festival site at Scone Palace.  The service will operate from outside Perth Concert Hall, Mill Street, Perth every ten minutes from 12:45 until 20:00 on Friday, with the last bus returning from Scone Palace at approx. 22:25.  The service resumes from 08:45 until 20:00 on Saturday and again on Sunday, returning from 22:00 until 01:30 each day.  On Monday buses will return from Scone Palace from approx. 09:00 until 13:00.

ENTRY TO THE ARENA:

The arena opens at midday on Saturday and Sunday (and is open at 18:00 on Friday for both Weekend and Camping ticket holders).  Throughout the site there are a wide range of bars to choose from, as well as a fantastic range of food units.  Don’t worry about going hungry!

The main stage starts at 14:00 on both Saturday and Sunday, and finishes between approx. 22:15 – 22:45 on both days, with the site remaining open until 01:00.

CASH:

Don’t panic about money….a cash machine is also available on site.

Dress for the prevailing weather conditions and remember it will always get cooler as the evening progresses!

So, you have all the information that you need – what can we expect from Limahl?

Well, we know that he is on stage early on Saturday afternoon, and KajaFax has spent much time contemplating what exactly he may choose perform.  Here is our shortlist of what we think may be on his list….

1.      Too Shy

Massive debut hit for Kajagoogoo and surely a must.  Sold by the bucket-load globally back in 1983 and been a firm favourite ever since both with fans and casual listeners alike.  Bet your house on it being performed!

2.      Never Ending Story

Another sure fire performance here.  A global hit for Limahl and somewhat of a signature song.  Loved by audiences and always performed impeccably – the show would not be complete without this song being performed!

3.      Ooh to be Ah

A good outside bet here.  Again, a massive hit and adored by fans of the ‘Goo!  According to the band, the song is technically quite demanding, so maybe only tackled on stage by a certain five piece outfit?  We hope it’s on that list.

4.      Inside to Outside

Not been performed on a stage since its initial release, ‘Inside to Outside’ is a fine song that is sure to be a crowd pleaser.  KajaFax is aware that Limahl has made reference to the song in interviews and on Twitter – we think (and hope) it may well make an appearance…

5.      Only for Love

Another hit and surely another crowd pleaser.  Limahl seems to be going through a period of musical rediscovery right now and certainly has a renewed enthusiasm for pop – this is his best ‘pop’ song and one of the best pop tracks of the decade.  We think it may sneak onto the set list!

6.      Too Much Trouble

Often overlooked but loved by fans.  Don’t be surprised to hear this on Saturday.

7.      Hang on Now

Limahl has often expressed the opinion that Hang on Now is the best song Kajagoogoo have written to date. On that basis alone, plus the fact it was a big hit for the band, we think it’s gonna be there!

8.      Shock

A rank outsider on our list – a hi-energy slab of Moroder empowered dance that would be sure to go down well. Maybe not well enough known with non-fans to be in the mix, but don’t rule it out!

9.       1983

A 2012 release and Limahl’s most recent single.  As a new song, maybe not in the spirit of the event, but in other ways, perfect for the day as it name-checks the festival itself, and celebrates the year ‘1983’.

It could, if performed, become THE ANTHEM for Rewind festivals for years to come in our opinion.

Rewind organisers – are you reading? 🙂

Almost certainly not going to be performed however as it’s not 80’s, but one for the dream-set list!

So, there you have it…the KajaFax guide to Rewind.   The one thing we can’t control or predict is the weather – but for the latest 10 day forecast for the Perth region, click HERE.  Let’s pray for good conditions!

The full KajaFax team will be on-site and backstage, and we aim to bring you a full report as soon as we return!  Remember, feel free to send us your photos of the event via email to admin@kajafax.com and we will publish them on-site.

Rewind Scotland is sure to be a great event and we hope that each and every KajaFax reader has a great time! 🙂
