Ellis Beggs and Howard

February 25, 2011

In March 1987, Nick Beggs teamed up with keyboard player ‘Simon Ellis’ and singer ‘Austin Howard’ to form a new band, simply known as ‘Ellis Beggs and Howard’.

KajaGooGoo

The band starting off gigging around London including playing at highly popular nightclub ‘Heaven’,  before later playing bigger arenas.  Initially, the press were less than supportive of the band, mainly as a reaction to Nick Beggs’ association with Kajagoogoo.  The band were to go on to be more popular in Europe than here in the United Kingdom.

The debut single, ‘Big Bubbles No Troubles’ was received very well indeed and it the best known of the singles released by the band, winning awards across Europe for both the song and video.

The single reached No.41 in the UK charts with the 1989 remix.

As Nick explained on his website, the single was really quite different to the rest of the album ‘Homelands’ and therefore the album was not as successful as the single.

KajaGooGoo

Including the remix, four singles were released in total, three in 1988 and the remix following in 1989.

After the disappointing lack of support for Homelands, the band did work on a second album between 1991 and 1992 which remained unreleased for many years.  This album did see a digital release much later, entitled ‘Ellis Beggs and Howard – The Lost Years Vol 1’.

KajaGooGoo

In February 2009, Nick announced on his site that he had put together unreleased tracks recorded from 1989, and a third album was born, ‘Ellis Beggs and Howard – The Lost Years Vol 2’.  In a nod to the less than perfect sound quality of the tracks and also to the faithful fans of the band, Nick released this album free of charge from his official site where it can still be downloaded:

http://www.nickbeggs.co.uk/news.html

Note on that page, the incredible painting of the band done by Ronnie Wood, it really is a wonderful piece.

There are many videos on YouTube of EBH, do have a listen if you aren’t familiar with the bands material.  I love their sound and I’m sure you will too.  The band may have been short lived, but the material they have released really was outstanding and will always be available for our listening pleasure.

They will always go down as a hugely important piece in the musical career of Nick Beggs.

These days, things have worked out pretty well for Simon Ellis.  He is a very successful musical director working with such acts as Spice Girls, Britney Spears, S Club 7, Jamelia, East 17 and Belinda Carlisle.

He has also written and produced tracks for many top artists.

Nick Beggs is currently touring with Kim Wilde and hopefully having ideas about more Goo concerts!! 😉

KajaGooGoo in Swedish Okej Book

February 24, 2011

by

For today’s post, we have a guest writer from Sweden along to tell a story and share some photos alongside.  Many thanks to Helena Nordberg for this one.  Over to Helena:

“For my birthday last month I got a book that was released in October last year. The book was instantly a success. It got a lot of publicity in the press and is written by some journalists that worked on the largest and most popular Swedish music magazine in the eighties (the one and only I would say). The magazine “Okej” was a huge success in the eighties and played big part in life for teenagers at the time. The magazine was, for it’s time, quite controversial. Having it for my birthday was a real trip of nostalgia for me. The book takes us back to the more important eighties music and surprisingly there is a bit about Kajagoogoo and Limahl. I say surprisingly because Kajagoogoo was never a band that “hit” here.  I sometimes say I must be their only and devoted fan up here 🙂 I got in touch with their music from a tape I got from a friend who had been to England on family vacation and bought it there. I instantly liked their music but I didn’t know what they looked like! So not until I got hold of the one and only issue of “Okej” that had them on the cover I knew. It was a bit shocking 😀

KajaGooGoo

I’m not sure if any Kajagoogoo album was released at all in Sweden, at least there was nothing in stock, because I had to beg my parents to have them ordered from UK. Limahl, on the other hand, is more wellknown because of the “Neverending story” and was to be seen in many articles in the magazine, but Kajagoogoo somehow faded away. My “story” with Kajagoogoo never faded though and I’ve always listened to their music from time to time, a bit worried that my old vinyl will be  destroyed. I´m probably the only person who has had Kajagoogoo played on my wedding too 🙂

KajaGooGoo

Strangely enough I never thought of searching on internet til my nephew -who also is, like myself, more than interested in music- one day asked me which band I liked the most when I was his age. After he had gone home that night I though I’d try to google and WOW! I´m so glad he asked me! This was in 2007 and I was lurking around the then very “sleepy” forum until I became a member in 2008. I really glad I got to take part in the reunion and finally see them live in concert!”

KajaGooGoo

Many thanks to Helena for sharing that.  It’s great to see the band as far and wide as possible and it’s brilliant that you discovered the band again and got to see them live in London for 2009 tour 🙂

If you have a story about the band, please get in touch!

KajaFax is always pleased to support any charity efforts from fans of the band and here we have a website to share with you, created by KajaFan ‘Babs Smith’.

KajaGooGoo

The website is http://www.whatson4me.co.uk/area/somerset/fundraising.asp

As you can see from the site, the area of focus is Bristol and Somerset so if you are in those areas especially and want to get involved, please do!

Comic Relief is one of the charities supported by this site so this is great thing for a charity that Limahl is working for, with his appearance on ‘Let’s Dance for Comic Relief’ which is coming up on March 5th 2011.

We can do our bit by supporting Comic Relief, supporting this site from Babs and make sure we all vote for Limahl when he appears on that show!

And here is Babs herself:

Babs shares credit for the site with Diane Francis.

Best of luck with the site and the charity work Babs, love of KajaFax love to you!

Rare German Big Apple Cassette

February 23, 2011
by

Well here we have a rare item which I’ve never heard of before and we’re lacking details on the background of this one.

It’s a cassette which is of German origin and is only recorded on one side.  It has a spoken message from Stuart and then the track Big Apple plays.

It also has these printed signatures on there.

KajaGooGoo

The text on the tape translates as ‘Limited Edition’.

Does anyone know where this tape comes from, how and why it exists?

Many thanks to Florian Hohring for sharing another brilliant item.

https://kajafax.co.uk/2011/01/21/lu-cozma-at-rhythms-of-the-world-2011/

KajaGooGoo

The tickets for this festival are now available at a very good price from this page which comes from the homepage of the festival:

http://www.crowdsurge.com/rotw2011/

The event is over two days and the tickets can be bought for individual days, for anyone aged 18+ these tickets are only £7 each which is astonishing for an event which will have so many artists and run across twelve hours each day!

Lu and Steve will play a 45 minute set at the Rhythms of the World festival on Saturday 9th July 2011, on St. Marys Stage around 3pm.  Anyone under 18 can get a ticket for only £3 so if you took a family of two adults and two children for the day, this would only cost £20 which is fantastic value.

KajaGooGoo

So, grab your ticket and I hope to see you there, let’s get out and support Lu & Steve and show our appreciation.

Keep an eye on the official site for updates on the festival:
