The Early Days – Art Nouveau – ‘Enemies’
In the days prior to Limahl joining the band, Kajagoogoo performed and recorded under the name Art Nouveau. The group went on to release the single Fear Machine in 1981, before recruiting the fifth member that would change both their name and their fortunes forever…
Recordings by Art Nouveau are relatively rare. Most common is the Fear Machine single and its B-side Animal Instincts which, although scarce, are still the most common in terms of availability. However, with only 1000 copies pressed, don’t expect to see too many for sale!
There is also a bootleg recording entitled Art NouveauLive which is a great thing to own but again rather hard to obtain.
In addition to the above, there are other lesser known tracks, most of which date back to recording sessions at London’s Blackwing Studios in 1979. For those of you that have never heard these scarce tracks, KajaFax presents ‘Enemies’ brought to you courtesy of Gimpy Dak.
If you enjoyed that and you want to hear more Art Nouveau, please check out these KajaLinks for more great content:
Art Nouveau Rehearsal Footage 1979
To round off today’s entry in fine style; here is what we consider to be Art Nouveau’s finest moment……Fear Machine.
If you are British and were a fan of pop in the 1980s, chances are that you will have been a Radio 1 listener.
Prior to the revamp of the I.B.A. Broadcasting Act in 1990 and the introduction of local stations onto the VHF band, the station was the pop station and had the monopoly on all things pop in the UK.
The BBC In concert series ran for many years and featured anybody who was anybody in the music business. Kajagoogoo were recorded twice for this show. Regular readers will remember our past articles that featured transcription albums of these shows – the 1983 White Feathers Tour show here and the 1984 Islands Tour here.
Today, we bring you more live footage from the 1984 Islands tour. Now scarce, the clip is lifted from the transcription album originally issued by the BBC back in ’84 – content that has never been re-aired since its original broadcast.
For this article, KajaFax has selected ‘Lies and Promises’…..Enjoy!
KajaFax prides itself on quality content and likes nothing better than to trawl it’s archives as often as possible to bring you the very best in all things ‘Goo – both old and new.
Today’s footage was recorded live at Jaxx Nightclub, Springfield, Virginia on March 29th 2000, and features Nick on stage with Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones.
Audience shot, the show is complete and shows the Beggion at his absolute best!
Without further ado, may we present part one of this great show. At one hour and thirteen minutes, it’s probably a good idea to grab a drink and settle down to an absolute treat….

Limahl ‘1983’ Update
It’s been a while since our last Limahl update, so here is the latest news on all things 1983.
Firstly, you may remember that a while ago, we mentioned a fabulous interview given by Limahl to Awesome Magazine.
Well, the April issue of the magazine which includes the Limahl interview has been published and is available now! In it, Limahl talks candidly about ‘life, the universe, and everything’…. (quite literally!) and also lets slip about the next Limahl single release!!!!!!!!!!
Please visit http://www.awesomeonlinemagazine.com to read the full interview and also see other great features on other great artists from the 1980s.
Not content to be sat on his laurels, our favourite frontman has also been interviewed by New York radio station WTBQ on its Revenge of the 80’s show. Broadcast but a few hours ago, the show is available via the station here or if you prefer, here:
There is also an upcoming interview with Limahl over on Bolton FM as a part of their Club Tropicana show – the webpage for which is http://kevgurneysclubtropicana.co.uk/

This is a brilliant page which also contains fabulous recorded interviews with Mark King from Level 42, Go West, Heaven 17, Midge Ure and Scritti Politti’s Green Gartside amongst others.
Keep checking on-line for the Limahl interview to be uploaded…..
Finally, we leave you with a teaser.

KajaFax has something special in store Limahl fans everywhere when, in conjunction with a well known company, we bring you another great prize giveaway.

Kajagoogoo – ‘Too Shy’ Sheet Music – US Edition
Today, we make a fifth visit into the world of sheet music, with this American issue copy of ‘Too Shy’.
Interesting to note that compared to the 95p cover price of its UK counterpart, the US booklet costs $2.50!
This edition was published by the ‘Hal Leonard Corporation’ under license from Tritec Music and is for Piano/Vocal/Guitar.
Examples of sheet music are great things to collect and make a fun part of your ‘Goo collection – more so of course if you are a musician! KajaFax has more examples of Limahl and Kajagoogoo sheet music in its archives, so if this is your thing, keep visiting the site for more.

Auburn – Indian Summer
Back in 2011, KajaFax was lucky enough to bring to its readers a great interview with Liz Lenten, vocalist with Baby Boomerang – the group co-founded by Kajagoogoo guitarist Steve Askew. If you missed the article, it can be viewed here.
By 1999, Baby Boomerang was no more and Liz had formed new outfit Auburn. Their debut E.P., ‘Sweet Sebastian’, received extensive UK radio airplay with follow up single ‘For Life’ establishing them on both the live circuit and over the nation’s airwaves as a firm indie favourite. Debut long player ‘Dreams’ followed in 2003 with support duty for Sophie Ellis-Bextor taking the Auburn sound to 40,000 fans over the UK and Europe in 2005.
On May 7th, the long awaited follow-up album is released.
Auburn’s ‘Indian Summer’ consists of ten atmospheric tracks; with Lenten’s compelling vocal leading the listener through a myriad of heartfelt experiences. Lyrics, although tinged with melancholy, are peppered with the seeds of optimism, unashamedly inviting you into the mind and soul of the writer….Marvellous stuff.
Interestingly, each individual track has a dedication contained within the sleeve notes, and also this very interesting quotation:
“Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming “Wow! What a Ride!”
Liz Lenten didn’t write that, but one does get the impression that she sure as hell believes in it!
Auburn is:
Max Gilkes – Guitars & piano
Jevon Beaumont – Bass
Pat Garvey – Percussion
Rob Lewis – Cello
The band is also taking the album on tour – and here are the details!
Live dates UK starting May 2012…..
4th – South Holland AC, Spalding
5th May – Terry O’Toole Theatre, Lincoln
6th May – The King Albert, Brighton
7th May – The Slaughtered Lamb, London
29th July – Exhibition Road Festival, London
Why not book your tickets now?
KajaFax have been fortunate enough to be given a pre-release copy of the CD by the band, and can thoroughly recommend Indian Summer as a truly great album and one not to be missed!
For more information, please visit http://www.auburn.org.uk/.
We wish the band and the new album every success!
The only station to come close was the ‘great 208’ Radio Luxembourg.

Today we bring you yet another piece of unusual ‘Goo related merchandise.
In the November of 1983, Limahl successfully kick-started his solo career with debut single Only for Love – the first track to be lifted from his hit album Don’t Suppose…. The song was not only a UK hit, but was a success over Europe and even hit the billboard charts Stateside.
Today, we feature a rare survivor from ’83….a limited edition ‘Only for Love’ promotional poster. These posters were issued in limited numbers by EMI Records to accompany the purchase of the record in either its 7” or 12” format.
KajaFax is not aware how many of these were originally issued, but we can say that we have only ever seen one!
Another bonus in purchasing the record was its b-side. Anybody who has ever seen the Kajagoogoo Live set of 1983 will be familiar with the song Over the Top. An a cappella piece, the song was performed on Kajagoogoo’s White Feathers tour but did not make it to vinyl until Limahl recorded it for release as a solo artist. A cappella refers to an all-vocal group performance of many styles; this performance being in the barbershop style, that is to say made up of four part vocal harmony.
We finish today’s article with a video clip featuring the little heard b-side, Over the Top (O.T.T.)
Remember that Limahl’s debut album, Don’t Suppose, is available on this Limited Edition CD. On a strict run of 2000 copies, you can order your copy here.
