Retro Interview – Limahl 2007
Today, we feature an interview that many of you may not have heard the first time around. Originally recorded for broadcast on UK national radio in 2007, Limahl takes us on a guided tour of stately home ‘Waddesdon Manor’. An unusual interview in many ways, the recording is interesting as it provides a rare opportunity for us to hear Limahl talk about things outside of music….
There is not much more for us to say except enjoy the clip!

Kajagoogoo and Limahl: Melodie und Rhythmus
Once in a while, something ‘goo related comes up that is too scarce and overtly desirable to ignore. Regular readers of KajaFax will remember some of our finer moments when we have featured bone-fide one-off items of memorabilia. Although not quite in the ‘one-off’ category, what we have today is pretty scarce nevertheless.
Roll back to the 1980’s and the days when Germany was carved up into the prosperous West and the Communist East. Whilst the Federal Republic enjoyed glossy, colourful editions of ‘Bravo’ magazine which showcased lavishly promoted and seemingly wealthy pop stars, those on the easternmost side of the country in the GDR were not so fortunate. Their state owned harmony was not (for the most part) meant to be disrupted by western idealism. Kajagoogoo were one of the few exceptions to the rule that prohibited the promotion (via pop music) of western European values.
Such ideas were, after all, polar opposites to the state controlled ideology.
The pop magazine ‘Melodie und Rhythmus’ was one such outlet for ‘suitable’ foreign musicians to peddle their wares. In the latter third of ’84, Kajagoogoo and Limahl graced the pages of the magazine which can (unusually for a periodical publication) be considered scarce. Why scarce? Well, such was the governmental control of all things essential to life back then that certain things were controlled by rationing – paper being one of those things. When supplies were exhausted, the printing presses stopped rolling. Due to the rationing of the paper and the subsequent low printing capacity in the GDR, the magazine was quickly sold out.
This example not only made it through the print works whilst there was still sufficient paper left to finish the run, but also managed to survive the next 30 years intact.

For those of you who are German speakers and via scans made from the original magazine held in our archive, hier ist der Deutsche originaltext.
On behalf of the rest of us who speak only English, a kind request. If there are any German speakers who are able to provide a translation, please email us on admin@kajafax.com.

Nick Beggs’ Rockets
‘Rockets’ were a French pop group who obtained their greatest successes in Italy during the seventies and early eighties. Dubbed by the press as purveyors of ‘space-rock’, Rockets delivered electronic beats and sounds to accompany their grandiose, sci-fi themed lyrical adventures; all theatrically portrayed by their space-age imagery. In a career move similar to acts that were to follow (Snap, Sugababes) the band were to, over the years, amass a huge list of members and past members, and have many varied incarnations, most of whom had a strangely silver pallor…..

Their concerts were characterized by the use of spectacular visual effects; laser beams, smoke, pyrotechnics, and special sound effects. Rocket’s behind-the-scenes supremo Claude Lemoine created them and contributed substantially to define their image and sound.

By the early 1990’s, Rockets had re-grouped, fronted by Classix Nouveaux vocalist Sal Solo and featuring ‘goo bassman Nick Beggs. Lemoine was still at the helm and although the sci-fi imagery was no longer dominant, Rockets’ manifesto was still the same. Quality music.

If you can track a copy of the album down, either in its original vinyl form or on a more recent CD re-issue, it’s a really great listen. It also has the Beggion’s musical thumbprints all over it!!!
It’s clear to see that the ‘Spaceman’ was in orbit as far back as ’92….

As a taster, here’s ‘Jimi’, a highlight from the album. Enjoy 🙂

Ellis Beggs & Howard Live Bootleg CD
Love or loathe them, bootleg recordings are a massive hit with serious collectors. There are a few good ones are in circulation of Kajagoogoo gigs from both the White Feathers and Islands tours, and also from later gigs ‘post reunion’. What are a little more difficult to come by are recordings of the solo projects and spin off bands. Today, KajaFax is pleased to be able to showcase one such rarity – a live recording taken from the opening night of the Ellis Beggs and Howard tour of 1989. Recorded at Birmingham’s Goldwyns Nightclub in its inaugural year, our lads graced a venue that was to become the venue of choice for both national and international stars. Blur, Nirvana, Crowded House, Nine Inch Nails and many, many more came to Goldwyns, performing to hundreds of thousands of eager fans. Goldwyns later became ‘The Foundry’, and in doing so morphed into middle England’s punk and indie Mecca.

Recorded in February 1989, this is a great quality audience recording that captures Simon, Nick and Austin in great form. KajaFax are incredibly lucky to have this CD in their collection, and are excited to present both visuals of the disc and audio from that recording here for you now. We extend a massive ‘thank you’ to the original taper who we are sure had a fabulous time whilst capturing this great gig!
First of all, let’s take a peek at the CD itself:
Has that wet your appetite? If so, sit back and enjoy a sample of the audio footage! Live on stage, here are Simon, Nick and Austin – otherwise known as Ellis Beggs and Howard – performing Big Bubbles, No Troubles.
KajaFax will return in a few days with more of the very best Goo! See you soon.

Longstanding readers will be more than familiar with our series of articles detailing gigs of the past with our collection of concert ticket stubs. Team KajaFax have lots of them! If you want a quick refresher, search ‘ticket stub’ in the KajaFax search bar – alternatively, click HERE. Today’s item comes from 1989 and features Nick Beggs’ post-Kaja project ‘Ellis, Beggs & Howard’.

The Astoria gig was the second of the 1989 UK tour, the group’s first following the T’pau support slot of late 1988.
As this cutting (taken from an edition of Blitz magazine issued in December 1987) explains, Ellis Beggs & Howard hit the scene to much interest and expectation:

KajaFax will return in a few days time with an article of exclusive content that will be of real interest to fans of Nick and his days with ‘Ellis Beggs & Howard’ – you do not want to miss this one!!
See you soon 🙂

Kajagoogoo….On This Day in History V
Today marks the 30th anniversary of the release of a favourite single of mine by any artist – not just Limahl. On this day in 1984, EMI records unleashed the follow up single to solo debut ‘Only For Love’ by issuing ‘Too Much Trouble’ on the record buying public. Available as a 7”, 12” and 12” Picture Disc, the single had alternate cover art in Europe to that published here in the UK. Thirty years later, the decision made by the label to vary the cover art by territory is a collector’s delight, so thank you EMI.
The song made its UK chart debut on June 2nd 1984.

KajaFax did talk to Limahl about the track and the video – the Limahl of 2014 is less enthusastic about the track that I am!

The song is essentially a break-up song. Limahl sings his way through a lyric in which he describes a guy who just decided that a relationship that he is embroiled in that just isn’t right, and being too much trouble, he ended it. The “do doos” symbolise him skipping down the street – happy that he extricated himself from the unwanted partner – neither happy nor heartbroken.
The video was shot in a classroom setting to appeal to what EMI saw as Limahl’s target audience, and Limahl remembers little about the day or indeed the venue.

Whatever and wherever, the track is a winner for us here at team Kajafax.

Kajagoogoo….On This Day in History IV
Once again, we return to our series of anniversary posts, which today celebrates the release of what is for many Kajagoogoo’s finest album, ‘Islands’.

Islands was unleashed on UK audiences in May 1984 and like its predecessor, White Feathers, was produced by the legendary Colin Thurston. For its background, we must rewind to the August of 1983 and the end of the White Feathers tour. EMI Records, having seen White Feathers sell in such huge numbers globally, were eager to capitalise on the successes of their latest super group and press on with new material . Prospective sales for the next single and album were expected to be massive. The band had been to New York at a time when rifts had started to occur between its members – Limahl had written Kajagoogoo’s next potential single, Only for Love, whilst the ‘Kaja’ boys favoured their song, Big Apple. With hindsight, both tracks could have existed as massive singles for Kajagoogoo and combined to form part of a mega second album. The reality is that neither camp wanted to record each other’s songs and as we all know, human nature took its natural course.

The album progressed from teaser single, Big Apple, to the sublime ‘On a Plane’ – the second track to be completed, also in 1983. With a conscious approach towards a new, more mature sound, Islands was bigger and jazzier than the band’s debut, incorporating a brass section which in itself was strikingly different to White Feathers. The album was recorded during the period of the band’s history that didn’t include Limahl, thus allowing Nick to reinstate his position as vocalist, resetting the dynamic of the band back to its Art Nouveau days. Many of the tracks on the album were dreamed up in rehearsal and written in the recording studio. It didn’t go unnoticed by both fans and the music press alike that the lyrics written by Nick during this period of his life were heavily influenced by the religious path he was in the process of finding. As well as the brass section (Guy Barker and Phil Todd) the Kaja’s were also joined on the other side of the mixing desk by Colin Thurston who provided backing vocals as well as wearing his producers hat on the business end of the buttons and sliders.
Also important in the albums development was Stuart, or to be more precise, what he achieved with his newly acquired technology. The PPG Wave Term System is as influential a sound on the album as its other debutante, Nick’s Chapman Stick. The Lion’s Mouth was the first Kajagoogoo song recorded that featured the instrument.
Spread over three studios and mixed at George Martin’s Air facilities, the album was a defining moment in the band’s history, as it superseded the sounds inherent on White Feathers to give the group a bite at grown-up, music press credibility.

The record was issued as a cassette, album, picture disc album and in much later as a compact disc.
Islands was, like its forerunner, taken out on the road, and the accompanying tour was huge. The band played the UK, Japan, Denmark, Austria, Switzerland, Germany & Holland, as well as venturing into the then forbidden territory of Eastern Europe.
Hungary, Poland, East Germany and Russia all invited Kajagoogoo to play live.
Islands is also notable for the inner sleeve artwork – a sculpture provided by Japan’s bass player, the late Mick Karn, entitled ‘The Mask of Confidence’.

In America, Islands became ‘Extra Play’ and peaked at a mere #185 on the Billboard Album Chart. With additional remix work by Steve Thompson and Michael Barbiero, the American sales figures were redeemed somewhat by the stellar performance of the single Turn Your Back on Me which hit the #2 spot on the Billboard Dance Chart.

The album made its debut in the UK album chart on 2nd June 1984.
We hope that you enjoyed today’s article! Here’s a track from the Islands tour recorded on the UK leg in 1984…. ‘The Power to Forgive’
