Ellis, Beggs and Howard Promotional Items

September 27, 2013

It’s Friday, and we thought it might be a good day to go back in time to the late 1980s………….and again to the ‘Ellis Beggs & Howard’ project.  Raiding the KajaFax archive, we today showcase some great memorabilia from that time.

EBH was Nick’s first ‘proper’ project after Kajagoogoo and in the March of 1987, he teamed up with Simon Ellis (Keyboards) and vocalist Austin Howard to form the band.  The group played a few low key gigs in and around the London area and also some support slots in bigger venues courtesy of then stadium fillers T’pau.

Our first item is a ticket stub, taken from Birmingham Goldwyns, where the band played in 1989.

The band played in and were promoted extensively all over Europe, where their album and singles sold in considerable numbers.

Here is a wonderful vintage hand-signed press photo:

Finally, we have this rather special DJ copy of debut hit Big Bubbles, No Troubles.  This custom die cut sleeve checks in at 12 inches of 45rpm black vinyl under the catalogue number PT 42090DJ.

We can’t play you the disc online…..so here’s the video.  Enjoy!

Scarce Philippines 7″ Single – ‘Rivers’

September 21, 2013
tags: ,

Rare vinyl has been the foundation stone on which KajaFax has been built, and the discovery of scarce and unusual vinyl items is something that team KajaFax (as do many fans and record collectors) get very excited about.

flag

Today, we wanted to highlight a recent addition to the KajaFax collection which ticks both boxes – namely ‘scarce’ and ‘unusual’.  😉

Dyna Records are a common source of western pop music in the Philippines, and there are indeed some very lovely and also very collectible records available on the label.  Kajagoogoo collectors may have seen the stickered sleeve 12” single of Never Ending Story pop up from time to time, and fans of other EMI acts, particularly Queen and Duran Duran, have many Pilipino issues in their collections.

These releases are often perceived in the same way as the many sub-standard Korean issues, the majority of which are nothing more than pirate or counterfeit discs.  This view is often substantiated by the curious use of 1970’s styled EMI logo’s which, although superseded by new designs in the UK and US, were clearly still in use in the Philippines as late as the mid 1980’s.

Dyna Music are, in fact,  a little different as they appear to be the official licence holders for EMI issued music in the Philippines.

parl1

Back in 1985, Kajagoogoo fans in the Philippines were treated to a single release that the rest of the world was not to get, as EMI via Dyna released ‘Rivers’ as a single.  A particular favourite of mine and also a standout track from the ‘Crazy Peoples Right to Speak’ album, Rivers was issued under catalogue number PAL-61192-A on the legendary EMI subsidiary ‘Parlophone’ label.

The ‘B’ side to the single was ‘Fear of Falling’.

There is no known video to the single and indeed no picture cover to the vinyl, but despite this, Rivers should be viewed as a legitimate single release and is a lovely thing to have in your collection.

Here it is….photographed from every angle!

Limahl Interview 1984 – Previously Uncirculated

September 9, 2013

Hello again!

In this entry into our newsfeed, we wanted to highlight some previously uncirculated interview footage featuring Limahl. Recorded on March 27th 1984 the interview is incomplete, but nevertheless fascinating.

audio-cassette

The interviewer is Steve Harris, who has kindly provided us with this clip to share with you now.

Steve Harris is an American journalist who has spent the last 30 years living and working in Japan, and was in the 80s and 90s in the privileged position of interviewing anybody who was anybody in the industry at that time,  as he explained to KajaFax:

“….I either interpreted for Japanese interviewers at these interviews or conducted the interviews myself. I collected the interviews on cassette tape and had one day hoped to share the archive — so here it is. It is very much a work in progress, so hopefully the number of interviews will continue to grow as I digitize and upload tapes from the vault…..”

Macmillan Cancer Support Charity Event…. A Night in Review

September 7, 2013

As announced earlier in the week, last night saw Limahl perform live at the Park Plaza, Charnock Richard.  The event was a charity fundraiser in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

One half of team KajaFax was able to attend the event and as promised, we have a full report 🙂

Untitled

After meeting Limahl over lunch, we were lucky enough to be invited to his hotel suite for a chat, which was an unexpected treat for us – Limahl was a genial host and made us really welcome.  After discussing the venue, his imminent performance, and also his plans for 2014, Limahl was called for a photo session with the press in attendance, and as a continuation of our ‘behind the scenes’ tour, we went down to the foyer to be met by photographers, journalists, hotel management and staff,  and of course Kajafans.

KfaxCrew

He finally took to the stage just before 9pm, and treated us to a great half hour set of chat and chart hits…

Never Ending Story

With both live music and music from the resident DJ before and after his set, this really was a great evening.  Limahl was superb – both vocally and ‘after-show’ as he signed autographs and posed for photographs with fans.

The final part of the night before the DJ took us into the early hours was of course the raffle, drawn by the organisers and Limahl.

Here’s what happened….

A huge debt of gratitude is owed to everybody involved with the event – not only Louise and her team at Ravat & Ray Dental Care, but also to the Park Plaza and Best Western for hosting the event free of charge, as well as the artists who gave their time and performed for free.

A thank you is also due to those local businesses that offered their support by the donation of prizes for the raffle.

Remember, you can still donate via text message:

Kajagoogoo – Vintage Magazine Scans

September 1, 2013

It has been quite some time since we featured magazine scans from yesteryear. Today’s entry contains some great scans taken from various magazines from all over Europe, originally printed in the 1980s.

KajaFax extends a huge thanks to Kajafan ‘Pink’, who very kindly took the time and effort to scan what seems to be a huge personal magazine collection for our viewing pleasure.  If that wasn’t enough, we are thrilled to announce that more scans from Pink’s vast archive are to follow in the forthcoming weeks! Pink is from Holland and is a new fan of the band, becoming first smitten with all things ‘Goo in 2012. 🙂

We hope that you enjoy the images.

Nick Beggs Update and Video

August 26, 2013

Today’s entry into the KajaFax newsfeed focuses on Nick Beggs and in particular, his rather good recent output.

You don’t have to be a fan of Kajagoogoo to know all about Nick….just a fan of good music.  A distinctive and versatile player, Nick really is the consummate professional and a true virtuoso.  Be it the Chapman Stick or the somewhat more familiar bass guitar, Nick is a true great on the British music scene, having crafted and performed some of the best pop and genre redefining progressive rock music of the last thirty years.

What new readers may not know is that his versatility extends way beyond music and into the world of art.  As a teen, Nick studied at Barnfield Art College in Luton, where he studied graphics and fine art as a freelance designer.  That early artistic interest, like his musicianship, has also been nurtured and Nick has, over recent years, had a parallel career in art.

KajaFax loves all things Beggs, and we know our readers do too.

Here’s an update of Nick’s recent solo output which you may want to take a look at 🙂

First of all – the music.

Take a look at ‘Steven Wilson’s Day Off’ and the follow up, ‘The Guitar of EPIJ’.

These surreal adventures in comic art need to be read to be believed, as our hero negotiates an adventure involving a vortex and some veggie ice cream in a tale culminating in the Goblet of Prog.

Mysterious stuff indeed.

There also contains a special message for all fans of Kajagoogoo….

Comic art at its finest and well worth the cover price.  This is a collectible of the future for sure 😉

Kajagoogoo Interview – Japan 1984

August 14, 2013

Today, we have something to share with you that should be new to most KajaFax readers.

ID-10083571fftttKajaFax have recently obtained some previously uncirculated interview footage of the band, recorded in Japan at the Tokyo Prince Hotel on July 10th 1984.  In an uncut, open and honest interview, the four remaining Kaja’s talk about their plans for a “postLimahlKajagoogoo.

The interviewer is Osamu Masui with interpretation by Steve Harris, who has kindly provided us with this clip to share with you now.

Steve Harris is an American journalist who has spent the last 30 years living and working in Japan, and was in the 80s and 90s in the privileged position of interviewing anybody who was anybody in the industry at that time,  as he explained to KajaFax:
