Kajagoogoo Ticket Stub Collection – Latest Update

May 15, 2013

Today’s post takes a long running and familiar KajaFax theme and gives it a different perspective….

Kaja84logo11

For some time now, regular readers will know that we have been featuring our ever increasing collection of tour ticket stubs on-site, and have in our collection amassed tickets from both the ‘White Feathers’ and ‘Islands’ tours as well as reunion tickets from the present day.  Team KajaFax has over the years been to many ‘Goo gigs and although many of our stubs have been lovingly retained from the shows that we have attended, many more have been donated and/or purchased from generous subscribers and online retailers.

Today’s entry falls very much into the latter category, but being so scarce an item could not be left to slip away.  When the opportunity presented itself to purchase it, we had to grab it!

Kajagoogoo toured the Islands album extensively in 1984.  To give you a taster of those days, check out this gallery of scans from the ‘Encore Live’ tour book:

On July 18th, 1984, Kajagoogoo performed at the Nagoya Civic Assembly Hall and it is from this venue that today’s ticket was originally purchased:

As indicated on the stub, the show was promoted by FM Aichi Broadcasting Company Ltd. We know that other dates from the Islands tour were recorded by Japanese radio stations. Did FM Aichi record this show for broadcast??

KajaFax would be interested to hear from any of our Japanese subscribers who may have items in their own collections relating to this tour.

To round off this entry, here is some video of the band on Japanese television in 1984, courtesy of KajaFan ‘FunkyRoger’.

Kajagoogoo Scarce Bootleg Live Album – ‘Here Is Limahl’

May 9, 2013

KajaFax have dedicated many pages over the years to vinyl.  We love a record’s feel, its packaging and most of all – its vintage authenticity!  There is something very real about a proper ‘album’ on a 12 inch, 33rpm vinyl record.  Besides, the format was the dominant force in the years that Kajagoogoo had their greatest commercial success, and so the best collectibles are to be found ‘on record’.

this disc is fake!

Today, we bring you an item that ticks each of the boxes mentioned above despite the fact that it’s not an authentic Kajagoogoo item but a bootleg.  Bootlegs are a great part of every music collection, and for some of the other bands of the era there are literally hundreds of releases available.  Quality is always variable, with some counterfeits being as good as official releases whilst others are barely listenable.  There are only a handful of different ‘goo bootlegs around and each one is highly sought after by fans.

‘Here Is Limahl’ was issued in the UK in 1984 and contains audio taken from the White Feathers show, recorded at the Hammersmith Odeon on May 31st 1983.  Its content was probably sourced from the home video release of the show issued the previous year, and most likely the VHS or Betamax versions judging by the quality.  Laserdisc technology delivered stereo audio in the same way that Compact Disc does and had that been the source would have given a flawless sound when cut to vinyl….  ‘Here Is Limahl’ sounds very much like a mono track with its fair share of glitches and tape ‘artefacts’ if that is the right way to describe them!

It is however a lovely item and a with its vibrant colours and thick glossy sleeve, a desirable and collectable thing.

To complete today’s post, we bring you some video footage from the Hammersmith show in the form of fan favourite Frayo.

See you next time!

Kajagoogoo – Scarce US Promo Poster – ‘Crazy Peoples Right to Speak’

May 3, 2013

Today we return to the familiar subject of Kajagoogoo merchandise and in this case, vintage EMI promotional merchandise.

Kajagoogoo’s third album, Crazy Peoples Right to Speak, was released in 1985  and unlike the previous longplayer ‘Islands’ (which was issued in the altered form of ‘Extra Play’) hit American stores in the same format as it did in every other territory.  The album was a moderate success and lead single from the album, ‘Shouldn’t Do That’ featured in both the charts and the hit film ‘Santa Claus the Movie’.

In this post, we bring you a vintage, promotional poster, issued by EMI America to promote the album.

Limahl – Don’t Suppose – Collector’s Limited Edition CD

April 20, 2013

As we hurtle towards the summertime, 2013 has, so far, been a relatively quiet year for ‘Kajagoogoo’ and its component parts.

Eager fans have been deprived of their ‘Goo for some time now, and it seems that the solo projects are also entering a quiet period.

With the exception of Steve Askew (who is busy working the live circuit), and Nick Beggs (‘progressively’ showing Lifesigns), the rest of the band have been very quiet – no doubt beavering away on some project or other.  In the absence of any new recordings or live shows, it is always nice to see older work revisited.

Gold Legion

Thanks to our friends over at Gold Legion, we have something to bring you that will appeal to all collectors (such as myself!)

Due to the phenomenal success of the first pressing, the management team over at Gold Legion have commissioned a second limited run of Limahl’s ‘Don’t Suppose’ album, restricted to 300 pressings, and in doing so have instantly created an extremely desirable Limahl collectible!

Don’t Suppose….The Collector’s Edition will be available as a strictly limited fold-out Digipak, containing a 12 page booklet with extensive sleeve notes by both David Ybarra and of course Limahl himself and also gives credit to KajaFax and, as one of our readers, that means YOU!

Video Exclusive – The CBTV Kajagoogoo Special (Complete Show)

April 14, 2013

As the grand finale to our video season, KajaFax want to bring you a really special video treat.  A huge thanks to KajaFan ‘Dawn’ for providing us with the original tape for this one!

cbtv

As a result of the massive interest in the band at the time of their launch, Kajagoogoo were the subject of numerous high profile TV specials that were broadcast across Britain in the early part of 1983.  One such show was the CBTV Special.  Rarely seen nowadays, most fans probably thought that the show was lost forever, buried somewhere in a cellar never to be aired again.  Thankfully, this is not the case.  KajaFax has been given a copy on videotape of the show and has converted in from its original off air VHS recording to a digital format in order for you to watch.

The show is a remarkable insight into the band as they prepare for the launch of Too Shy and takes us behind the scenes at EMI Records, Utopia Studios, and of course those all important live shows.  It is a real treat.

Without further ado, here it is.  For those of you located in Germany, we understand that YouTube have blocked the video.  Not to be perturbed, we have converted the original DVD content to a smaller file size  and made it downloadable for your enjoyment.   Click on the below link to obtain your lower resolution copy if you are unable to stream it directly:

Kajagoogoo New Video Footage – Volume 3

April 8, 2013

It’s time for another archival instalment of ‘Goo.

Today, we begin with a Limahl interview filmed by TV-AM back in 1983 at the time of Limahl’s departure from the band.  Here, our man talks to telly hero Timmy Mallett about leaving Kajagoogoo and the recording of his debut solo single and album.

We hope you enjoy the clip:

Fans were most upset at Limahl’s departure from the band and in future posts we will be bringing you scans of a letter issued by his management back at the time of the split to explain just what exactly was going on…   For most, the television was the primary source of pop information and fans were likely to have switched on their favourite show to be confronted with the news.

Did you here it there first?  If so, it may have been courtesy of John Craven on his daily news roundup, ‘Newsround’.  Here is that announcement footage:

Moving on to 1984, we have a studio performance of Kajagoogoo top 10 hit Big Apple.  The name of the exact show is unknown to us, but it is a great performance and one that we felt should be shared!

**video blocked in some countries – if that means you, download it here **

Thanks for watching – our next post concludes this season of newly discovered footage with a very special item that you won’t want to miss.

See you then!

Kajagoogoo New Video Footage – Volume 2

April 2, 2013

Hello again!

It’s time for more archival video from the fan archive. Firstly, we have the band interviewed for British television show ‘Data Run’.  Long since forgotten, Data Run was perhaps most famous for the theme tune, composed by Vince Clarke and performed by Alison Moyet!

It was, nonetheless, a fine piece of early Saturday morning television if you happened to be a light sleeper of school age and into your pop music!

Here are Stuart and Nick interviewed for the show….

Moving on now, we come to another forgotten ITV show.  The Saturday Show was made by Central TV from 1982 until 1984 and presented by Isla St Clair (The Generation Game) and Tommy Boyd with assistance by (the now late) actor David Rappaport who appeared as the most odd character ‘Shades’.  Looking at him, I wonder why that was 🙂

Kajagoogoo appeared in ’83 at about the time of the release of Big Apple.

Finally for today, we have Nick and Steve interviewed by soon-to-be Blue Peter presenter Mark Curry on ‘The Get Set Picture Show’.  This was a BBC Saturday presentation aimed at schoolchildren and featured the usual mix of competitions, pop music, cartoons and hobby and activity ideas.

KajaFax after much deliberation has decided that this type of TV should be reintroduced to our screens……today’s kids are missing out on such a lot!

KajaFax extends its thanks to KajaFan ‘Dawn‘ for the donation of the original videotape to the KajaFax archive that the above clips are sourced from. 🙂  Enjoy the clip – see you next time for more video!

Kajagoogoo New Video Footage – Volume 1

March 27, 2013

Today, we feature two short clips from the archives.

Firstly, we have Nick Beggs’ appearance on kids TV show ‘Hold Tight’, recorded at Alton Towers back in the summer of 1983.  Hosted by Bob Carolgees and Pauline Black from ska band Selecter amongst others, the show saw two teams of children compete against each other on a giant ‘snakes and ladders’ board in order to win fab prizes…..namely free rides on the attractions.  The show also saw performances by and interviews with just about every major pop star of the day.

Hold Tight! ran on ITV from 1982 but had vanished from the airwaves by ’87.

For more information on Alton Towers and it’s affiliation with the 80s music industry, follow this link:

https://altontowersmemories.net/page15.htm

Our second clip features Limahl talking pop on an unknown UK panel show.  Subjects such as Culture Club, TV show ‘The Tube’ and the squeaky clean, drugs free 80’s scene (ahem!) are tackled here.  See what you think….

That’s all for now – see you again in a few days with some longer clips and also more short ‘snippets’ from the archives….
