Mick Karn Islands Sculpture

January 4, 2011

The very sad news hit the world today that Mick Karn has died after a battle with advanced stage cancer.

Karn is a legend of the musical world, best known as the bassist for new wave band, Japan.  He is particularly known for playing fretless bass.

Japan were a massive influence on the 80s new wave and synth movement, definitely so in the case of KajaGooGoo who were huge fans of Japan and of Mick Karn.

Alongside his other musical projects, Karn was also a talented sculptor and one of his pieces was used for the inner sleeve of the KajaGooGoo album, Islands:

And as credited on the back sleeve:

RIP Mick Karn: 24th July 1958 to 4th January 2011

I’m sure many tributes will flood the internet to Mick Karn and all totally deserved.  His music has touched so many listeners and had a huge impact on so many other musicians, one of those absolutely being KajaGooGoo.
