KajaGooGoo Original Demo Tape 1982

Early collectable pieces from the band are always hugely appealing to fans, they capture a moment in time and together they tell a story about the history of the band.

This piece is particularly special and was personally given to KajaFax by Jez Strode.

KajaGooGoo

It’s a demo tape from 1982, featuring two tracks.

KajaGooGoo

The tracks are White Feathers and This Car is Fast.

KajaGooGoo

The astute KajaGooGoo fan will also note that the tape bears the name ‘Angel Publishing’ which was the same publishing company that appears on the early singles of one ‘Chris Hamill’.

KajaGooGoo

Also of note is the early artwork, the KajaGooGoo logo lettering is tall and slim and looks less refined than what it became when they were to sign with EMI.  The demo 1982 style:

KajaGooGoo

Later 1982 logo ready for the release of ‘Too Shy’ in 1983:

KajaGooGoo

I love the fact that these tapes would have been excitedly produced and handed around in the hope of gaining enough attention to land a record deal.  To be given such a piece of Goo history by Jez is fantastic and we’ll have this content digitised and shared to you all soon.

KajaFax Signed DDH Competition Winners

June 26, 2011

KajaFax Signed ‘Death Defying Headlines’ Material Winners

On Wednesday, we ran a competition to win some collectors items from the DDH single release, signed by Limahl and Jez.

https://kajafax.co.uk/2011/06/22/kajafax-signed-material-competition/

The materials we sent out were in strictly limited numbers, made even more collectable being signed by the band members.

We asked two questions, which proved to be tougher than we thought!

Firstly, we asked which record label did Limahl sign to but never release under, after leaving EMI.

The correct answer to this was Arista.  This should have been rather easy as Limahl had talked about this in the interview he gave to John Barnes from BBC Radio, featured on this site very recently as part of the DDH promo.

Secondly, we asked what make of drum kit was played by Jez in the ‘Too Shy’ video.

The correct answer to this was Simmons.  Simmons are easily identifiable by those extremely cool hexagonal pads, used so heavily in the early 80s.  We had a bit of a discrepancy given that the bass drum he used was made by ‘Premier’.  This did cause some entrants to state that the kit was made by ‘Premier’ and we’ve decided to allow this as a valid answer given that he was in fairness, using ‘Premier’ also.

So, with the aid of a random number generator to select, we have our three lucky winners.

The first prize is the press pack which features a signed promo CD, signed flyer and press release.

KajaGooGoo

Winner: Lee Halbert

We have two additional prizes of a signed flyer to giveaway, both of course signed by Limahl and Jez.

KajaGooGoo

Winners: Steven Flavell, J’nae Rae Spano

Congratulations to the winners, you’ll be contacted by email to arrange delivery of your prize. A big thanks to everyone elsewho took the time to enter, better luck next time.

This competition concludes our work with the ‘Death Defying Headlines’ single.  We hope you all enjoyed being part of the promo as much as we did.

Limahl and Guy Phethean Interview pt2

June 26, 2011

Limahl and Guy Phethean Interview pt2

Following on from yesterday, we have the second part of our fascinating interview with Guy Phethean.

May I move on now to the track ‘Destiny’ and its spectacular vocal provided by Sylvia Mason James. How did you discover her, and what was she like to work with?

KajaGooGoo

I mentioned moving down to London in ’91 earlier and my association with singers and musicians there. Whilst hunting for a flat, a fellow keyboard-player told me of a room to let in a house owned by a singer called Ruby James. I moved in to Ruby’s house and discovered that she had two singing sisters, Joyce….and Sylvia….and thus the association was born.

Sylvia is another Sagittarian and as such, we all got along famously! Sylvia is a phenomenal singer (Limahl & I were gobsmacked when she started singing the vocals for Destiny – a real goose bump moment!) a consummate professional and best of all, a lovely and thoughtful person with whom I am still working with to date in a live capacity.

At what point did Jupiter as a production team cease to be?

I can’t remember the exact date but it sort of petered out around 1999/2000. As home studio technology was becoming ever cheaper and record companies could procure the services of remixers for next to nothing, we sort-of lost interest and after 7 happy & exciting years, along with many ups and downs, Jupiter ceased to be a working entity.

I assume that you have worked on some exciting projects and with some noteworthy people since the 90’s. What projects since Jupiter are you most proud of?

We are proud of all of the projects we have worked on. We made sure that they were exactly as we wanted them before they left the studio, such is our attention to detail.

Highlights obviously were the remixes on three UK No.1 singles, having OUR remix of Kim Wilde’s version of Evelyn Champagne King’s ‘Shame’ being used as the main mix and having Peter Andre in our studio to write and remix with us.

A funny ‘lowlight’ is this story. Limahl was good friends with the Dutch producers who wrote and recorded ‘(Our love is) History’ by Mai Tai – a song which Limahl always loved. As a project, we were sent the vocals and did our own house/garage remix on it. I can’t remember how it came about, but we had a meeting with then the relatively unknown SIMON COWELL in his A&R office in West London. Mr Cowell went bananas after hearing our remix saying how he’d missed signing this the first time round and will not be missing it this time, asking us to do 2 more mixes by the end of the week and he was going to release and sign it. We did a high five after leaving the office, spent the next 3 days working like dogs to complete the requested remixes and then called his office to tell him the good news but were greeted by his secretary saying that she would pass the message on.

KajaGooGoo

We waited. Nothing. We called again and were again greeted by his secretary saying she would pass on the message. We waited again. Nothing. We called a third time to say that we had done as he requested and could he get back to us, to which her reply was ‘can you stop calling us please – Mr Cowell is very busy with Zig and Zag’ (who are/were 2 stuffed puppets) !!

Finally, I would like to move on to the present day. I know that your services are much in demand, and as such you are incredibly busy. What is forthcoming in the Guy Phethean diary?

I am now proud to be Musical Director of a group of session musicians called The Allstars Collective. This is an outfit formed and run by musicians FOR musicians. We all have terrible stories of how we’ve been ripped off by unscrupulous band leaders, so everything to do with the Allstars is transparent – anybody can see the accounts. We currently have something like 50 active members, all with great skill and great attitudes

Four of our members have just come off tour with George Michael and should anyone require more work due to financial worries, we will endeavour to spread the gigs around.

One of our first gigs in the mid 2000s was backing Heather Small at the Albert Hall along with a 150-piece gospel choir, for an NSPCC charity fundraiser, which raised over £2m!

We do everything from a jazz trio, session work, big and small corporate events, festivals here and abroad…even the odd wedding when they want something really special!

We are very proud to be closely associated with soul singer, Jocelyn Brown for whom we do many gigs and are close personal friends. Jocelyn sang the title track of our debut original album called ‘All About the Music’, which was also produced by Average White Band’s frontman, Hamish Stuart.

KajaGooGoo

Our finest achievement came recently in Nov. 2009 when we were the house band at another charity event at the Albert Hall, this time for Gloria Hunniford’s ‘Caron Keating Breast Cancer Foundation’ where we backed Brian May, Joss Stone, Mel C, Sharon Corr, Nerina Pallot, Bananarama and Bonnie Tyler.

Allstars Collective have many videos on YouTube, are constantly doing charity fundraisers and we are in the process of recording and releasing our 2nd original album, which features performances from James Brown’s sax player Maceo Parker, our good friend Jocelyn Brown, Edwin Starr’s brother Angelo and Level 42 saxman, Sean Freeman.

The website is www.TheAllstars.co.uk

KajaGooGoo

Limahl is a lovely and kind person. We still keep in touch; occasionally going for lunch or myself and my daughter popping in to his flat.

I still do the odd gig with him on his fantastic ‘Tribute to the 80s’ show where he sings the best of not only Kajagoogoo & Limahl songs but also Tony Hadley, Duran Duran, Nick Kershaw and many more. And long may he continue!

KajaGooGoo

Thank you for speaking to KajaFax, Guy.  It’s been a really interesting interview and a pleasure to chat with you.

Thanks!

A huge thanks to Guy for that interview – a really interesting read and a wonderful insight into the whole Jupiter project.

Please remember to visit http://www.theallstars.co.uk/ for more information on both Guy and the Allstars Collective.

Jupiter Limahl and Guy Phethean Interview pt1

Limahl and Guy Phethean Interview pt1

KajaFax readers may remember our recent article on Limahl and his work as a part of production team ‘Jupiter’.  As a finale to that feature, KajaFax is proud to bring you an exclusive interview with Guy Phethean – keyboard player, incredibly talented songwriter, and the ‘other’ half of Jupiter!

KajaGooGoo

Good Afternoon Guy.  Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to speak to KajaFax about your work.

Thank you, Steve.

I understand that you and Limahl set up ‘Jupiter’ Productions sometime in the early 1990’s. Did you know Limahl prior to becoming business partners? If not, how did the partnership come into being?

Obviously I knew OF him as my girlfriend in 1984 was mad on Limahl and Alex Higgins too!!  I first met him in about 1989/90 when I was living in Nottingham and keyboard-player for a stadium-rock type band called Angels of Hope.  We were managed by a Mansfield night-club owner called David Knowles who was a close personal friend of Limahl’s and we all lived & worked in a 4-bedroom farmhouse in Derbyshire.

David brought Limahl over one day and he played my keyboards and sang for us!

Shortly after that, Limahl told David that he was working on some original tracks and needed some fresh input keyboard-wise and so I was asked if I’d like to pop down to London and do some keyboard sessions with him.

I went down to London for the weekend, stayed at his flat and worked on some tracks with him at his home studio. One of them was a version of Too Shy with a Soul to Soul type beat and a couple more which I still have the demo tapes for.

On the Saturday night, he took me to a night called Singers at The Cockney on Tottenham Court Road – a fabulous night where there was a house band and talented singers would get up and sing their hearts out! Limahl got up and sang ‘A House is not a Home’ and brought the house (and the home!) down.

It was at ‘Singers’ where I met many musicians and singers, which enabled me to move down to London in 1991 and become a professional musician down here.

At what time did ‘Red Spot Studios’ become Jupiter HQ?

After moving down from London, I was busy doing gigs with singers, when Limahl re-contacted me to tell me that he’d moved his studio to separate premises from his house to the floor above a record-company office, and would I like to work on some more projects with him.

So, I went to check out his new studio, really loved it and so we did our first track (written and recorded) as Jupiter – (The name was because we are both Sagittarians and Jupiter is our ruling planet)

The track was called Destiny and it was sung by session vocalist Sylvia Mason-James who has toured with very major artists including the Pet-Shop boys and is featured on the Jimmy Nail No.1 ‘Aint No Doubt’ as the girl who’s ‘lying’ !!

KajaGooGoo

Destiny was released with a mix from Tuff n Jam and did relatively well in the clubs and on radio. This was followed by another track with Sylvia called ‘Reach Out’, before we concentrated on remixing.

We only stayed about 6 months in that office before taking over an existing studio in Shepherd’s Bush which we named ‘Red Spot Studios’.

As it’s so easy to make excuses not to work when your studio is at home, we had a strict working ethic at our new studio, working from Monday to Friday usually from midday to about 6.30pm, amounting something like 60 different projects from start to finish.

KajaGooGoo

I read on Limahl’s website that ‘Jupiter’ did a great deal of remix work for some big names within the industry. Can you tell me more about that?

Yes. Our very first remix was for a guy called Toni Di Bart.

Toni was a soul singer and had written a song called Real Thing, the vocal of which was used on a house/dance remix which became massive and eventually reached number one in the UK charts. Toni asked us to replicate how the original song sounded but was more souly/funky than housey/dancey – still, it appeared as a ‘remix’ on the No.1 record.

KajaGooGoo

Our other UK No.1 remixes were on ‘Mysterious Girl’ by Peter Andre and ‘Dreamer’ by Livin’ Joy.

The music that Jupiter produced was a world away from that of Kajagoogoo or Limahl as a solo artist. Did you hit any problems with ‘preconceived’ ideas when promoting your work?

Not really. Most people didn’t know Limahl was part of the team! In fact he actively discouraged it as 80’s artists at the time were perceived to be VERY uncool in a very cool-imaged music market. We had success because of the combination of Limahl’s excellent production & songwriting skills along with my keyboard-playing and the wealth of musical knowledge and experience between us.

This interviewed will be concluded in pt2 tomorrow.

GEMMA AGUILAR RELEASES HER DEBUT EP – IT’S MY LIFE

Gemma Aguilar may only be 17 year of age, but she has taken the live circuit by storm.

Since 2009, with her fine balance of acoustic driven indie pop with electro pop undertones, a distinctive voice, and personality to match, the singer / songwriter from Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire releases her debut EP “ Its My Life” on CD from her website, digital download from iTunes and other digital retailers on July 3rd 2011.

With 9 regional BBC Radio performances, including BBC Introducing, a finalist at the 2009 Open Mic at Portsmouth Guildhall, as well as supporting The John Young Band, Gemma has been the opening act for boy band Blue at the Buckinghamshire Armed Forces Day in June 2011 performing to over 4,000 people.

Gemma is excited at the realisation of her dream:
“Releasing an EP is very surreal and exciting” says Gemma.  “I have always dreamed of people being able to buy my music, and now its possible!
This EP consists of five songs I wrote myself. Some of them were written a few months ago, and some a few years ago.
My view on writing is if a song is going to happen, it happens and generally in a very short space of time . The energy and lyrics flow so well, almost subconsciously.
It’s only now that I can look back and appreciate what I’ve achieved, and how the music has evolved from an acoustic guitar and a scrap of paper, to fully produced songs on CD, that everyone can listen to”.

Gemma has spent the past year recording “It’s My Life”, her 5 track EP with music producer Steve Askew (previously guitarist with 80’s band Kajagoogoo) at REDdot Studios in the leafy market town of Leighton Buzzard.

She takes her influences from the major female artists of the 21st century including Laura Marling, Ellie Goulding, Avril Lavigne and Rhianna along with artists such as The Kooks, Plan B. whilst reviewers have commented that her voice could be the modern day Kirsty MacColl.

Gemma Aguilar has proved that she is one of the most talented writers and performers of her generation. Her independent attitude, ability and willingness to take risks ensure that she is an artist and performer to keep an eye on…

With over 50 gigs in 18 months, Gemma Aguilar now has her sights set on performing at more festivals and gigs throughout the UK to promote her debut EP “It’s My Life”.

At an early age, Gemma learnt to play the guitar and inspired by ‘The Who – Won’t Be Fooled Again’ she started to write her own material. As with all aspiring teenagers, she posted her work on Myspace, which was soon noticed by REDdot Music, an independent studio and management team in her home town of Leighton Buzzard who have taken her under their wing, and are professionally recording her music.

Aguilar has a very open approach to writing her own material.

“It generally just happens without me realising” – she says.. “When I’m feeling very much in a certain way about something I pour out the emotion on to paper and the music comes with it. Occasionally I will look for a word and some lyrics will magically appear in my head inspired by the word. Other times I will just start singing a tune and realise that its a new song on its way! I write all the time, can be anywhere, anytime when a song strikes me. The ones that happen naturally are the best ones.

I don’t want to be “the next” so and so – I want to be Gemma Aguilar.  All my music comes from the heart, when I play my music I feel the emotion and my words have meaning when I sing them.”

KajaGooGoo in Look in Magazine June 1984

Look-in was a long running children’s magazine centered on ITV television programming in the UK, and was subtitled the ‘Junior TV Times’.

It ran from 9 January 1971 to 12 March 1994.

After television, the next biggest topic featured was pop music. This usually comprised interview articles and pull-out pin-ups of the top acts of the day.

This is a feature on KajaGooGoo from 1984, at a time when the band were a four piece.

An Art Nouveau Interview with Bob Brown from Angel Cards

June 23, 2011

Back to the Beginning with Art Nouveau – an interview with Bob Brown.
by theraggedtiger

Bob Brown is a retired printer and former manager of the Angel Card factory in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire.

He gave a group of local lads and their band ‘Art Nouveau’ their first rehearsal space – and along the way helped create Kajagoogoo.

KajaFax caught up with Mr Brown to find out more.

KajaGooGoo

So Mr Brown, how did you first meet the guys?

Jez Strode, who was the drummer, worked for me as a driver.  He was a quiet, reliable lad who’d been with the company for a couple of years when he asked if his band – which was then called Art Nouveau – could use our place for rehearsals.  He explained that they’d been playing in his Dad’s garage, which they had tried to soundproof with egg boxes!  That hadn’t been very successful and there were complaints from the neighbours.

That must have been an unusual request.  Were you OK with that?

Yes.  I said that would be fine and even offered them use of a company van to drive their equipment to gigs.  I used to let the lads practise at the factory I managed, out of hours when the place was empty.  I suppose it could have been seen as a bit of a risk to let four kids loose in a deserted factory, but I’ve always felt you should trust your instincts with people, and Jez struck me as someone who wouldn’t let you down…and I was right.  They always left the place tidy and locked up properly – you wouldn’t have known they’d been in.

KajaGooGoo

So, at that time, how did you actually rate the band?

Well, I would hear them rehearse if I was working weekends, but I can’t say I noticed any signs of star quality…though to be fair, I was in my early forties at the time so not really part of their target audience!

KajaGooGoo

What was the turning point as you saw it?  What changes did you see from those early ‘Art Nouveau’ days?

I guess it was around 1981 really.  This lad they called ‘Limahl’ came down from Wigan to an audition at the factory.  His hair was dyed in black and white layers and he was wearing face paint, which would have looked quite unusual in Leighton Buzzard at the time.

 KajaGooGoo

They took him on as their singer and changed their name to Kajagoogoo.

What changes did Limahl bring to the line-up?

I’d only ever seen them in jeans and baggy jumpers, but Limahl had obviously given them all some fashion lessons.  They looked very different from how I’d always seen them before!  It was about then that they decided to move down to London and really try to make a go of the band.

I wished them all the best but was sorry to see Jez go as he’d always been very strong and such a good worker.

How did it feel when you first realised that they had made the big time?

I’d initially helped them out because I think you should always give young people a chance to achieve their ambitions, but to be honest I’d never thought it would go much beyond playing local clubs and bars.  When my wife and I first saw Kajagoogoo on Top of the Pops in 1983 playing their number one single ‘Too Shy’, I was gobsmacked.  I was delighted to see they’d done so well.

KajaGooGoo

As things turned out, I really admire the way they made something of themselves.  And I’m very pleased that I played a small part in it.

Here is a clip of one of those Art Nouveau rehearsal sessions in that very factory, uploaded for us by Kajagoogoo’s very own Jez Strode:

Last evening, Monday 19th June 2011, our piece with Limahl and Jez was broadcast on Granada TV.

KajaGooGoo

KajaFax on Granada TV:

We thought it was a good piece, they have suggested we got the five piece back together though which is not the case!!  It felt like not enough was made of the single being the centre point.

Low budget effects and strange name captions aside, I thought we came across really well if I may say so!

We have to add again, we had such a tremendous day and both Limahl and Jez are such genuinely lovely guys, we had a day to remember.
