Kajagoogoo Exclusive – Ooh to be……Nick Beggs’ Jacket!

March 19, 2012

Very occasionally, a piece of merchandise comes your way that is so exciting that you cannot believe your good fortune in being in ‘the right place at the right time’.  Today, KajaFax is proud to present the spoils of one such moment.

The internet is a magical thing; it brings together people that, under other circumstances, would never have met.  One such chance virtual meeting a couple of months ago resulted in this unexpected find – a true piece of memorabilia and an important item of band history.

The story harks back to 1983 and a song championed by DJ and music historian Paul Gambaccini – namely Ooh to be Ah.  Regular readers will of course remember our previous article about the film shoot for the promotional video for the song, which you can read again here.  Unofficial band historian Jez Strode gave KajaFax access to a fantastic gallery at that time, a montage of which can be seen below, accompanied an exclusive live performance of the song recorded live in 2008.

Enjoy that? Ever wonder what happens to all those props and outfits used during the filming?  Well, so do we…..

KajaFax does have in its archives a few items relating to the song:

….the 7” test press of the single:

….the promotional ‘in store’ poster:

and…..something else…..

Take a look at this video of the band on Top of the Pops back in 1983:

A superb single?  We think so.  Certainly one that cemented the band as one of Britain’s biggest chart acts.  Now….look at the below photograph:

As we said earlier, what happens to all those props and outfits?

Most of them have probably been destroyed, but we can explain the whereabouts of one such item!

May we present…..this jacket, as worn by Nick Beggs in the pop promo video for Ooh to be Ah.   A pale turquoise/blue colour, the jacket is leather and is in incredibly good condition.

Previous owner and Kajafan ‘Susan’ continues the story:

“Nick gave the jacket to a former colleague of mine called Donna. In the 80s, she temped as a receptionist in London and did a stint at a record company. She adored Nick and used the time to follow him all over. Her story is that she simply pestered him to death until he gave her the jacket….there is a small gold coloured item in the pocket (wrapped in tissue). I feel sure this is one of his hair beads although I can’t say for definite.”

A real treasure and another important part of the group’s history.

As for the contents of the pocket……well, make up your own mind.  Is it one of the Beggion’s hair beads?  Whatever it is has been carefully wrapped in tissue and kept in the pocket all these years…..

Steve and I send a huge thanks to Susan for parting with her beloved jacket and thus enabling us to bring it to you the KajaFax readers.  We would also like to thank ‘Limahlette‘ for the fantastic tour scarf also featured 🙂

The following comment was posted by Nick Beggs in regards to the jacket and the ring, via his official fan facebook page:

Nick Beggs: Not sure about the ring in the pocket. It’s not a bead from my hair, sorry to disappoint. I think it may have been a gift from an admirer? It’s hard to remember it was 29 years ago and I think I was in a band????

Nick also confirmed the jacket’s authenticity and thinks he bought it at Top Shop on Oxford Street. 🙂

      Hi Kryssi,

Thanks for the comment and well spotted on the photo, but I have to say that there is no way that it’s a ring. The thing itself is not much bigger than the ferrule on a snooker cue (the brass bit near the tip) so would not go around a little finger – evan a particularly small one!

I would love to know what it was – obviously something significant given that it has been lovingly preserved all these years wrapped in tissue paper…. 🙂

Maybe it was a bead from a fan given to Nick to put in his hair? 😉
